Exhibition Piece: Space Voyage

The goal of this project was to create a 2D art piece by using 3D modeling technology to start off the process. The process began by creating a 3D clay piece, and then scanning that into a 3D modeling program to create a 3D printable STL file. While we did print the object out in plastic with a 3D printer, the main event of the project was created by taking single image shots from the 3D scanning process. By taking images from my object mid scan, I was able to get interesting forms that I could manipulate in photoshop. These manipulated images eventually became the image you see me standing next to in the first image, and which you can see up close further down on this page.

The art piece itself was created mostly by accident. When changing the background of the image to black, I noticed the object seemed reminiscent of a space ship coming out of the darkness of space. With this image in mind, I continued the space theme by adding small flames to the protruding arms of the ship, and multicolored stars the background. Once it was complete, the object became barely recognizable as part of the 3D model I created and became its own artwork. At that time, the name space voyage seemed the most fitting for this piece.

This project is special to me as well because, due to some recognition from my 2D and 3D art professor, Prof. Colbeck (seen to my right in the first image), this piece was selected to be in the Paying It Forward: KSU Artists and their Protégés exhibition at the Kennesaw State University Fine Arts Gallery. The piece hung in the gallery next to a piece created by my professor from August 27 to September 18 of 2016. The flyer for this show can be seen further down on this page. Along with this, the piece was also featured in a conference paper by the same professor.

If you’d like a more in depth explanation of this project, or to see the process work, you can download a pdf version of the explanation plaque I wrote up to hang with the piece at the art show. This plaque had the entire process summary, the process work images, and my context statement for the piece on it. There is also a link for downloading the section of my professor’s conference paper which includes this piece in it as well if you’d like to see that.
