This is an image of a book cover redesign I created for the book, Children of the Mind by Orson Sott Card utilizing Illustrator and Indesign. The book cover features a designed front page, back page, inside flaps, and spine. The overall theme of the design is sci-fi. The cover features the silhoette of a man sitting on the ground and looking at a starry night sky. Above him, two pairs of eyes can be seen. One is an angry red pair, and the other is a calm looking blue pair.

Children of the Mind: Book Cover Redesign

The goal of this project was to redesign the cover of a book we enjoy. In my case I used Orson Scott Card's, Children of the Mind. For the redesign, I decided to aim for a sci-fi design that would cover all sides of the book. On the front page, you can see the protagonist's silhouette looking at a starry sky. The book is heavily based around space travel so I thought this was fitting. The title of the book, Children of the Mind, can be taken either literally due to two characters in the book, or figuratively due to the way the story is told. To capture this idea, I placed two pairs of eyes on the cover. One is an angry red pair to represent one of the characters who is volatile and mean, and the second is a calm blue pair to represent the second character who is soothing and nice. The fact the eyes are disembodied represents the metaphorical side of the title. The back cover features a radio dish like object which is my personal take on what an ansible, an important object from the book, looks like.

The font on the cover is one I chose because I believe it fits the sci-fi feel of the story nicely. The text on the inside front flap is a synopsis of the story, while the one on the inside back flap is author information. I then added book reviews to the back cover along with a functional barcode and price tag. On the spine, I also designed the logo for the fake publishing company, Eclipse Publishing, to make the book cover as realistic as possible. Overall I believe I did a great job capturing the essence of the book and creating an interesting book cover design.
